Most teams asking "what does CAD outsourcing cost?" get a useless answer, because the price depends almost entirely on how well the job is defined. This guide explains the pricing models used in mechanical design outsourcing, what moves the number, and how to write a scope that produces comparable quotes.
The three pricing models
- Hourly. Used when the scope is exploratory: concept work, mechanism development, reverse engineering, or "we don't know yet what this has to look like". You carry the risk of scope growth, but you can stop at any point.
- Fixed price per deliverable. Used when the output is countable: a modeled part, a drawing sheet, a sheet metal flat pattern, a rendered image. Good for documentation work and drawing packages.
- Monthly capacity / retained engineer. Used when you have continuous overflow and want a known cost and a known person. Cheapest per hour, but only worth it if the pipeline is real.

- Manufacturing process. Injection-molded plastic parts cost more engineering time than welded steel structures because every wall, draft and boss is a tooling decision.

- Assembly count. Cost tracks unique part count, not overall machine size. A large welded frame with 20 unique parts is cheaper than a compact mechanism with 60.

- Native CAD ownership. If you need editable SolidWorks or Inventor files plus a documented feature tree, budget more than for a STEP-only handover.
Where the money is usually lost
In our experience, budget overruns in outsourced mechanical design rarely come from modeling hours. They come from: starting before the manufacturing process is chosen; skipping a design review before drawings are produced; and releasing drawings that the supplier then queries, which forces a second documentation pass. Deciding the process first — sheet metal versus machined, welded versus bolted, molded versus printed — removes most of the risk.
How to scope a job so quotes are comparable
Send every prospective partner the same package:
- What the product or machine does, in two sentences.
- The intended manufacturing process and target volume.
- Known constraints: envelope, loads, interfaces, standards, materials.
- The deliverable list you expect: native CAD, STEP, PDF drawings, DXF flat patterns, BOM, renders.
- Number of review rounds included.
- Deadline and whether it is hard.
If two quotes differ by a factor of three on the same package, the difference is usually the deliverable definition, not the hourly rate.
Typical engineering effort
An hourly rate is only one input into the final number. Engineering effort, the number of revision cycles and manufacturing complexity move a budget far more than the rate does, so it is worth estimating effort alongside the published rates above:
- Single machined or sheet metal part, modeled and drawn: a few hours.
- Small mechanism or fixture, fully documented: one to two weeks.
- Complete machine assembly with fabrication package: several weeks.
- Injection-molded consumer product from concept to tooling-ready CAD: the longest of the four, because prototype iterations sit in the middle.
Why hourly cost alone is not the comparison
An hourly rate only tells you what one hour costs, not what the finished, manufacturable design costs. The factors that change total engineering cost are:
- Engineering experience. Experienced engineers reach a workable concept in fewer iterations.
- Manufacturing knowledge. Designs made without process knowledge get corrected later, at supplier speed.
- Number of revision cycles. Each cycle costs calendar time as well as hours.
- Quality of deliverables. A drawing package that a supplier can quote without questions removes a whole documentation pass.
- Native CAD requirements. Editable, well-structured models are cheaper to modify for years afterwards.
- Design for manufacturing. DFM applied during modeling avoids redesign after the first quote comes back.
- Communication. Fewer clarification rounds means fewer billed hours.
- Product knowledge retention. A team that already knows your product does not re-learn it on every job.
- Cost of rework. Manufacturing rework typically dwarfs the engineering hours that would have prevented it.
Competitive hourly pricing is useful, but total engineering cost depends on how quickly the work is completed and how much redesign or manufacturing rework is avoided.
