Retractable Dog Leash with Poop Bag Storage and Waste Container
Complete multifunctional retractable dog leash product combining a leash retraction mechanism, brake and lock, clean poop bag storage, a used-bag container, and an ergonomic injection-molded plastic housing.
Engineering challenge
The client wanted a consumer pet product that combined several functions into one handheld device: a retractable dog leash with a working retraction mechanism, storage for clean poop bags, and a container area for used bags. The challenge was to design the full leash product — mechanism, housing, and user features — as a compact, ergonomic, manufacturable plastic assembly suitable for injection molding.
Design approach
Guenzo developed the complete retractable dog leash product in CAD, including the housing, handle, internal reel, spring-based retraction system, brake/lock mechanism, cord guide, clean poop bag storage compartment, and used-bag container. The design considered product ergonomics, assembly sequence, housing split, wall thickness, internal ribs, screw bosses, snap-fit features, moving-part clearances, and general injection molding requirements. The mechanism was laid out so the leash could extend, lock, release, and retract reliably inside the compact housing.
Manufacturing considerations
The product was designed as a plastic injection molded assembly. The CAD design considered draft angles, radii, wall thickness, internal supports, assembly access, moving mechanism space, spring and reel integration, brake/lock part tolerances, and user handling. The design also needed to support functional prototyping of the retraction mechanism before moving toward tooling.
