How to Turn a Sketch into a Production-Ready CAD Model

A sketch describes an idea. A production-ready CAD model describes a part a supplier can actually make. Here is the process we use to bridge the gap, every time.
Step 1: Capture requirements
Before opening CAD, write down what the part must do: function, environment, loads, lifetime, regulatory requirements, quantity and target unit cost. Half of the design decisions follow directly from this list.
Step 2: Pick the manufacturing process early
Sheet metal, CNC, injection molding and 3D printing each push the design in a different direction. Choose the process before detailed CAD so you don't redraw.
Step 3: Build a concept model
Block in the main shapes, mating interfaces and key dimensions. Skip fillets, tolerances and drawings. The goal is to test fit and proportion fast.
Step 4: Detail with DFM in mind
Add the manufacturing details the chosen process needs: draft for molding, K-factor and reliefs for sheet metal, tool-accessible corners for CNC. Use real fasteners and supplier components from manufacturer libraries.
Step 5: Drawings and BOM
Drawings answer how big, how it fits and how good. Add GD&T only where it matters. The BOM should match the assembly tree exactly.
Step 6: Release pack and quote
Bundle native files, STEP/DXF exports, PDF drawings and BOM into one folder. Send to two or three suppliers for parallel quotes. Expect questions — that is how you find the parts of the design that are not yet manufacturable.

- Simple bracket: 1 day from sketch to release pack.
- Small mechanical assembly: 1–2 weeks.
- Custom machine: 6–12 weeks.

- Skipping the requirements step and discovering load cases mid-design.

- Releasing without checking flat pattern, BOM or interferences.
